WEB PHD (PARA PIRIN00B) :: miércoles 30 julio 2008 · 18:19:29 :: JULIAN ::

Pregunta:

kesh says: RAB or PHD bag, and what to believe of those temp ratings Looking for a lightweight cold weather bag and as this is an expensive investment I wanted some input. I like light(ish) weight and I like mountains and winter. Nothing high altitude (for now). Central Norway, Cairngorms. But I'd rather buy a too warm bag as I'm a skinny thing and feel the cold, and it's easier to make a warm bag sleep cooler than vice versa. And a couple of years from now I see myself in colder higher places. I have narrowed it down to the RAB Q800 at about £330 or the PHD Hispar 800 at £420. Both weigh about the same, both have 800 grams of down. The RAB's down is rated at 850 US, the PHD's at 900 "Lorch" which it says is equivalent to about 938 US. Yet the temp ratings are vastly different. RAB's is -18 C "comfort" to the PHD's -33 C "typical operating temperature". So what do I make of those ratings? Now I'm sure these are both excellent bags from companies with a great reputation, but by paying £90 more for the PHD will I really get 15 more degrees of comfort (and a 50 gram weight saving)? Advice would be appreciated.

GuyHurst says: Re: RAB or PHD bag, and what to believe of those temp ratings The US fill power rating is well below the European one, so 850 US is proably about 750 European -- and that will make a big difference against the 900 power. I've got a PHD bag with 800 fill power down in it and it's at least as warm as my old ME 700 fill power bag which was a third again as heavy. The PHD one is rated to -5C and I've slept in it a few degrees cooler than that with just a base layer on in perfect comfort, so I would say the temperature rating is actually pretty conservative. Wish now I'd waited and got the 900 power fill, which is supposed to be the dog b____s. Rab bags are good, but I think PHD ones are even better, so I would get the Hispar.
